In some cases, cleaning and redevelopment may improve the bore’s performance and extend its usable life. However, the outcome depends on the bore’s construction, age, condition and the cause of the problem. Not every underperforming bore can be fully restored.

Where records are unavailable, our assessment is based on the information that can be obtained from the existing installation and its current performance.

Bore Cleaning and Air Lancing

Where appropriate, compressed air may be used to agitate and remove loose sediment, silt and debris from inside the bore.

Air lancing and airlifting can help clear accumulated material and redevelop the bore. The effectiveness of this process depends on the bore design, its condition and the type of material present.

Iron and Mineral Buildup Treatment

Some bores develop iron-related buildup, mineral deposits or scale around the casing slots and water-entry areas.

Where suitable, a bore-specific chemical treatment may be used to loosen or dissolve these deposits before the bore is flushed and redeveloped. The treatment selected depends on the bore construction, water conditions and the suspected type of buildup.

Chemical treatment is not appropriate for every bore and is only carried out after the available information has been assessed.

Once the cleanout or treatment is complete, the bore is flushed and its discharge is observed. We then explain the results and whether any further action may be required.

Iron bacteria are naturally occurring microorganisms that can contribute to rusty-coloured slime and deposits within some water bores. Iron and mineral buildup may collect around pumps, pipes and the water-entry sections of the bore, potentially restricting water flow over time.

Where appropriate, we may use a bore-specific chemical treatment to help loosen these deposits before flushing and redeveloping the bore. The treatment required and the likely result will depend on the bore construction and the type and extent of the buildup.

In some cases, an older bore can be cleaned and redeveloped after a long period without use. However, the outcome depends on its construction, condition, depth and the groundwater currently available.

We begin by gathering as much information as possible about the bore. Where suitable, we can remove loose sediment, flush the bore and observe its discharge to assess whether further work may be worthwhile.

We do not carry out underground casing repairs or realignment. Where significant structural damage is suspected, further specialist assessment or replacement drilling may be required.

There is no set cleaning schedule that applies to every bore. Some bores may operate for many years without requiring a cleanout, while others may need attention sooner because of sediment, iron buildup, mineral deposits or changes in performance.

Rather than cleaning at a fixed interval, we recommend monitoring for signs such as reduced flow, increased sediment, discoloured water or changes in pump operation. If these symptoms appear, the bore and pumping system should be assessed before deciding on the appropriate maintenance.
